Spend a weekend meditating, relaxing and rejuvenating in the lovely surroundings of Gladstone’s Library.
The weekend retreat will include a series of Virat Dharana practices for deep relaxation and rejuvenation of mind and body. We will also do some gentle yoga exercises and some pranayama breathing techniques.
Recordings that can be used for home practice will be shared at the end of the course.
Virat Dharana ‘sound of silence’ Meditation
Virat Dharana is an ancient practice of meditation that involves supine (lying down) observation of the body guided through chanting in the Indian language of Sanskrit, in which Yoga has been traditionally preserved. During the practice, the Sanskrit words are also translated into English as one takes attention through each part of the body. This is one of the oldest forms of meditation in India, distinct from a Yoga Nidra because of the significance of the sound and its effect on every cell in the body. The chanting is known as ‘the sound of silence’ because it enables the listener to experience profound silence in mind and body. The chanting is subtle and precise and has to be developed over many decades of in-depth training in the ancient traditions of meditation where it has been perfectly preserved by lineages of monks over thousands of years. In Sanskrit, ‘Muni’ means a saint who has silenced the mind. Silence means an absence of vibration, amplitude, wavelength and frequency. This is the world of singularity, called in various spiritual traditions by names such as Para Brahma, Holy Spirit, Allah or Nibbana. In all the oldest spiritual traditions around the world, ancient lineages have preserved the most sacred teachings orally in the form of sound, chants and hymns. The enlightened saints who experienced ultimate silence gave the language of sound through which spiritual teachings have been preserved. Patanjali says that in order to experience silence, one has to listen and learn from a teacher who has reached this silence.
We are very fortunate to have the guided Virat Dharana recordings of renowned Yogi, Dr Kumar who conveys deep silence in every syllable. It is the pure and silent quality of his mind and expertise in chanting that enables the listener to experience such deep peace when practicing. Dr Kumar has practiced for the last 45 years across 46 spiritual traditions, in the ancient lineages of Veda, Tantra, Hinduism and Buddhism, including Tibetan systems. In our lives we often experience stress, fatigue and disharmony. This is experienced at a physical, mental and emotional level leaving us more open to generating negative reactions and experiencing suffering and anxiety when small or large difficulties arise in day to day life. Emotions and reactions create imbalance and ‘scavenge’ the electrons that are in the cell membranes throughout the entire body affecting our physical and mental wellbeing. In order to feel relaxed, balanced and in harmony physically, mentally and emotionally the electric activity of the cell has to be normalised and brought to a steady and single state. Virat Dharana is the way to bring the mind and body to a stable state and maintain healthy electron activity and cell potential. In this meditation, the mind reaches ‘Turiya Vasta’ an absorbed samadhi experienced when brainwaves reach beyond the ordinary delta state of deep sleep and attain a quantum frequency. The result is that the practitioner feels mentally and physically rejuvenated and emotionally balanced, equipped to deal with day to day activities with more energy and clarity.
Course led by Mary Lindsay-White
Mary Lindsay-White has practiced meditation for over 20 years. She has studied with Dr Kumar since 2008 and has experienced profound changes, becoming much more effective in everyday life with greater vitality, concentration and creativity together with a sense of deep peace and contentment. Mary, who has been teaching since 2011, enjoys sharing the benefits of meditation and loves to keep in touch with students and hear how their regular meditation practice is bringing tangible changes. She lives in Bayswater, London and Wotton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire and teaches meditation in both locations as well as at weekend courses throughout the UK. She is a volunteer for The Yoga Healing Foundation. During her 25 years in International Banking and ten years as a trustee for a micro-lending charity, Mary travelled extensively and has worked with people all over the World. She lived in Germany for several years and is fluent in German. Mary is a qualified personal development coach and a member of the International Coaching Federation.

We have a number of bursary places that are funded by the charity to cover the Course Fee for anyone who is unable to meet the cost. If you would like to apply for a bursary please contact us for an application form.
Occasionally, students have to give up their bursary for extenuating circumstances, so please contact us if you would like to be considered but have missed the deadline.
How to Book
We divide payments into a compulsory Course Fee and a voluntary Suggested Minimum Donation, this is a two step process.
The Course Fee covers the basic costs of running the courses. All Traditional Yoga teachers are volunteers. The Donation recognises the value of the teaching and supports our charitable work in the UK and India. For more information about the charity please click here.
